o Why?
o We have different preferences and likes.
o But you are studying in the same standard and are in the same
division, shouldn’t you have the same choices?
o No
o Why?
o Although we are from the same standard and are from the same
division, we have different tastes for e.g., we eat idli/ dosa in
Mumbai.
o Why?
o We like the taste of idli/dosa although it is a South Indian food
item.
Debrief
We go to the same school, are in the same standard and division.
Yet we have differences in our tastes and experiences. It is
because we come from different backgrounds. Similarly, India is
a vast country and people residing in it come from different
religions and cultures. These differences mean diversity and we
Indians take pride in our rich cultural heritage.
Today let’s learn about what diversity means in our vibrant,
colourful country.
4
In this section the students will enact a play on unity in
diversity, thereby learning tolerance to live in a diverse
society.

Ask
o Why were the villagers not happy to see a new person?
o The stranger was dressed differently.
o Why were they scared?
o They were scared because they thought the stranger would
change, influence the habits and way of life, and he would
harm them.
o Were they treating the stranger as an equal?
o No, they were not treating him as an equal, and when you don’t
treat someone like your equal, it is called inequality.
5
Debrief
Inequality arises when a person does not have the resources or
the opportunities that are available to another person. In this case,
the stranger was not given a chance to be equal.
Ask
o What did the guruji tell the villagers?
o All humans are the same; we find lands, drinking water, we
grow food, we talk, and above all, we love nature. We shouldn’t
be afraid of each other.
o When did the villagers include the stranger in their lives?
o When the stranger offered help.
o How should we as citizens adapt to each other’s way of life?
Varied answers, for e.g., we should adapt to each other’s way
of life by celebrating all the festivals.
o How will understanding diversity help our country?
o It will teach us to be tolerant.
Debrief
We should respect each other’s religions and ways of life.
Understanding diversity will make us more tolerant and teach us
to be united.
