In this section the students will compare the functioning
of the school and the state through question and answers.
Ask
o How many buildings are there in our school?
o Varied answers. One two.
o Do all the students study in one class from nursery-grade 10?

o Why?
o It would be difficult for one principal and teacher to manage so
many students.
o So how are the students divided?
o According to their age there are divisions for each standard.
o So what is the principal’s and the teacher’s role?
o The Principal oversees the whole school; every teacher
monitors he/her class so that the school operates properly.

Brief
The school needs authorities for smooth operations such as
teachers, security guards and the Principal. If there is any event,
everyone works in cohesion to make sure everyone is safe.

In this section the students will assemble the jigsaw
puzzles to learn about the authorities, the offices and
functions of the district administration.

Directed Activity
Let’s play a game. Divide the class into 3 groups. Give them 10
minutes to assemble the jigsaw puzzle.
Ask
Each group to stick it on the chart paper given.
Discuss: What would be the roles, functions and responsibilities
of the authority/ building in the pictures.
o Why does Maharashtra have so many districts? What would
happen if there was only one district?
o Maharashtra is a big State, and it needs different authorities to
govern the State. If there were only one big district, it would be
difficult for the minister to oversee the state.
Debrief
We saw that our school is one unit and each member has different
roles and responsibilities. Similarly, Maharashtra state too has 36
districts each district has authorities supervising it. Today, let’s
learn about District Administration.

The administration is shared by the Zilla Parishad and the
District collector in Maharashtra.
Appointed by: State government
Functions: Collection of agricultural tax, maintaining law and
order,conducting elections, and disaster management.
Superintendent /Commissioner of Mumbai
Subhodh Jaiswal Commissioner of Police.
Functions: maintains peace and order in the district/city.
District courts
Head: District judge
Functions: hears cases and gives judgements.

In this section the students will be sensitized towards the
natural disasters which may occur and how they could
take active part in helping the victims.

Brief
Thus, we comprehended that just as our school has many
divisions and each division has an authority who supervises
them, Maharashtra too has many districts. Each district has a
District Collector like a Principal who manages it; each region
has a Commissioner like the security guard who ensures peace
and safety is maintained in the district, and each school like a
district works in unity if there is an event.

Brief
Each district as we learned has its authorities who oversee the
area. If faced by a disaster all the authorities join hands and help
every citizen in need. We as citizens too should be alert, informed
and active and help whenever there is a calamity.

members.
Activity information
Brief: This activity is specially designed to involve parents in
enlightening the children about the importance of the police,
and other authorities in their lives. The cards can be ket in the
purses, wallets, on the class ntoice boards. These cards can be
given to all the citizens.
