What is Indian secularism?

According to our constitution, only a secular state can realize its objectives and ensure the following:

  1. That one religious community does not dominate another,
  2. That some members do not dominate other members of the same religious community.
  3. That the state does not enforce any particular religion nor take away the religious freedoms of individuals.

The Indian state works to prevent this in two important ways:

  1. The country is not ruled by a religious group and nor does it support one religion. All government spaces like courts, police stations, government schools and offices cannot promote any one religion over another.
  2. Constitutionally and legally banning practices that promote human disrespect and inequality, such as untouchability.

Questions for thought:

  1. Have you ever witnessed discrimination on the basis of religion? When and where?
  2. Why do you think our country is called ‘Hindustan’ although we are secular?
