Please show video no. 1 to the children from the Desh Apnayen resource bank.Discuss the following questions after the movie:

  1. What is globalisation to you? Write your answers on chits of paper and share it with your bench mate. Read each other’s responses and have a quick chat about the same.
  2. What does globalisation encourage?
  3. What can globalisation is criticized for?

After the video, please discuss the following definition of globalisation:

Globalization is the ongoing process that is linking people, neighbourhoods, cities, regions and countries much more closely together than they have ever been before. This has resulted in our lives being intertwined with people in all parts of the world via the food we eat, the clothing we wear, the music we listen to, the information we get and the ideas we hold.

This interconnectedness amongst humans on the planet is sometimes also referred to as the ‘global village’ where the barriers of national and international boundaries become less relevant and the world, figuratively, a smaller place. The process is driven economically by international financial flows and trade, technologically by information technology and mass media entertainment, and very significantly, also by very human means such as cultural exchanges, migration and international tourism.

Activity 1: How close is the world to me?

Time needed: Teacher to decide

Objective: Students develop an understanding of the links they have that extend beyond local and national boundaries.

This activity can be done individually or in pairs. It’s fun either way

Create an image showing your connections to the rest of the world based on the music you listen to, using the following questions:

  • What’s the origin of the most recent song or piece of music that you listened to? (Identify the nationality of the creator of the music as well as the tradition to which it belongs.)
  • What technology do you most commonly use to listen to music?
  • Where is the technology made? Where is the company that owns the technology based?
  • How have you obtained music – online purchases or physically bought from retail outlets?

DIscuss: What is globalisation in relation to me?
