Activity name – Research n’rap

Time needed – teacher to decide

Watch video 1 from the resource bank (Political Parties Rap). Two American college kids create and sing a rap song on the political parties of their country. Before showing the video, please ask the kids to pay special attention the characteristics and values of the party, for instance, conservative, liberal, etc.

Now, divide the class into groups and assign an Indian political party to each group. Some parties you can choose from are:

1. BJP (Bhartiya Janata Party)
2. INC (Indian National Congress)
3. AAP (Aam Aadmi Party)
4. AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam)
5. SP (Samajwadi party)
6. BSP (Bahujan Samaj party)
7. CPI (Communist Party of India)

In their groups, the students must research these parties and their manifestos and make a rap song like the one they saw. The song must cover the following:

1. When was the party founded? By whom?
2. Is it a national or a regional party?
3. What are the values of the party? Who does it work for?
4. Has it ever formed the government? If yes, when?
5. Who is the current leader?

The class must then perform these songs for the class. The teacher is welcome to make a video of the same and share it on the school’s intranet as per permissions.
