Activity: Hamara model corporation

This is a very long activity, but definitely recommended!

The class has just seen the wonderful example of Warangal city’s municipal corporation turning the face of their city in less than 2 months.

Every city has similar problems that an active citizenry can tackle. For this activity, the class must be divided in groups of 5-6. Then, the groups must make a list of the acute problems facing their city and find data on the same.

For instance, if one of the problems is poorly built roads, then visit your municipal office or download your corporation’s app on your smart phone and find answers to these kinds of questions:

  1. How long ago was the road maintained?
  2. How many accidents have happened on the road due to its condition?
  3. Who is responsible for this task? How can he/she be accessed?
  4. Who is the local councilman for this area?
  5. Etc.

Collect as much data as possible and compile a dossier and submit it to the teacher. The teacher must choose the best dossier from the set and the kids must go to their local BMC office, present it to the commissioner or the Mayor and start a campaign to solve this problem. It would be great if a signature campaign could be done before hand, where the kids collect around 1000 signatures in support of their problem.
